Jean Cecilia Lorentz Batalden was born January 11, 1949, in Mankato, Minnesota, to Roman and Doris (Kalbow) Lorentz. She was baptized and confirmed at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato. She attended country school, parochial school, graduated from Mankato West High School in 1967, and received her teaching degree at Mankato State College. She married David Loren Batalden on March 20, 1971, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato. After marriage they lived in the Mankato/Lake Crystal area until 1973, when they moved to Cannon Falls. In 1984, they moved to Wanamingo and during that time Jean worked as a substitute teacher. They moved to Northfield in 2000.
Jean was a member St. John’s Lutheran Church and a former member of the both VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. She enjoyed spending time with her family, camping and being outdoors. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother.
Survivors include her son Roland and grandson Davis of Lonsdale; her daughter Davida and husband Nathan Edmundson and granddaughter Kayla Anne of St. Paul; her mother Doris Lorentz of North Mankato; her sisters: Deborah Lorentz of Florida, Nancy (Dennis) Wilson of Amboy, Rosetta (Steve) George of North Mankato, Rochelle Lorentz (Mike Lane) of Lake Crystal; her brothers: Jerry Lorentz of North Mankato, Douglas (Tammy) Lorentz of Madison Lake; her brother-in-law, Arlyn (Eunice) Batalden of Buffalo, Wyoming; 2 sisters-in-law: Mary Rishavy of Owatonna, Marilyn Batalden of Colorado; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years David on May 10, 2010, her father Roman, and her sister Rita Peterson.
Jean passed away unexpectedly on Saturday morning, April 28, 2012, at Northfield Hospital, at the age of 63.
Services will be 11:00AM Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. John E. Quam officiating. Refreshments will follow. Music will be provided by Karl Robson. Interment will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
